Jesse set to play Zeinvel Shmeckel in SHLEMIEL THE FIRST

Laugh until your sides burst in this unique revival of Robert Brustein’s musical

adaptation of the folktale-based play by Nobel Laureate Isaac Bashevis

Singer. Since its world premiere in Cambridge before sold-out houses in 1994,

Shlemiel the First has delighted audiences in New York (Lincoln Center), San

Francisco (American Conservatory Theatre), Philadelphia, and several cities in

Florida. The naive beadle Shlemiel is sent on a pilgrimage to spread the town

of Chelm’s questionable wisdom to the world only to wind up right where he

began, believing he’s found a second Chelm exactly like the first. Gordon’s

playful and elegant production features fun-loving lyrics by Arnold Weinstein

(Dynamite Tonight and Casino Paradise), set to gorgeous klezmer score that

makes the designation “masterpiece” easy to shout.

JESSE PLAYS JIMMY JAMES IN

“THUNDER AND LIGHTNING”

THUNDER AND LIGHTNING tells the story

of The Storm, a Negro League baseball

team, on the day that Jackie Robinson took

the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947,

breaking the color barrier in Major League

sports. A Major League scout has come to

Ralston Stadium, home of The Storm, ready

to sign two players to a contract. The team

owner seems ready to sell any of his players to the Majors. Surprisingly, the scout offers a

contract to the team manager, whose maturity and experience are needed to work with the

newly signed players from the Negro League. As the season opener enters the ninth

inning, the scout plans to sign one more player - either Thunder, the veteran, or Lightning,

the rookie, team rivals competing for the prize of a golden future.
